Agriculture & Rainforests Seminar, Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, UK
Description:
The title of the seminar is Agriculture in the Rainforests and it will aim to provide a forum for discussion on the agricultural issues surrounding the recent challenges outlined by the Prince's Rainforest Project (see www.princesrainforestsproject.org ). Part of the aim of the Prince’s Rainforest Project is to “find ways to make the rainforests worth more alive than dead” – the seminar will provide an opportunity for experts to air their views on this and for students in conservation to learn more about the issues.
The aim of the seminar is to raise awareness for a UK audience of the current issues surrounding agricultural activity in the world’s rainforests. We are sourcing a number of key speakers from industries which use the rainforests as well as from environmental organisations.
Key speakers at this stage:
A representative of the Prince’s Rainforest Project will be presenting on the projects they are currently undertaking concerning the sustainable production of palm oil in Indonesia.
A member of the Rainforest Foundation UK will be presenting on the projects with which they are involved in Southeast Asia and Central Africa.
A representative of the Brazilian Embassy will be presenting on agriculture in the Amazon.
An expert on the satellite tracking of deforestation in the Amazon Basin will be presenting on the latest developments in this field.
We are also sourcing representatives from the bio-fuel industry to present on the potential for the development of this industry in the rainforests.
There will be an indicative charge of £10 per person to cover the costs of the day which is payable on the day. This will cover the costs of the welcoming pack and lunch and may reduce depending on the amount of sponsorship that we succeed in getting.
If you are interested in attending and would like further information, please reply to Lisa on 233564@rac.ac.uk by the 9th February.
