UNEP World Business Summit on Climate Change, Copenhagen (Denmark)

Delivering recommendations on a new climate treaty.

Climate change, typically viewed as a threat, also presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lead the next industrial revolution as the world shifts to a low carbon economy. At the World Business Summit on Climate Change, the Copenhagen Climate Council and the world's foremost low carbon pioneers will take the lead in kick-starting this industrial revolution.

The Summit will bring together business leaders with the world's top scientists, economists, civil society, media leaders, politicians and other thought leaders to show how business can help solve the climate crisis through innovative business models, new partnerships and the development of low carbon technology. Top executives from global companies will be joined by leaders from civil society and governments. Participants will be decision-makers and influencers, including chief executives, heads of state, government ministers, leading thinkers, advocates, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs.

The Summit will send a strong message to the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 15) on how to remove barriers and create incentives for implementation of new solutions in a post-Kyoto framework. Recommendations from the Summit will address the overall political framework and key business issues, including specific opportunities for rapid implementation of low carbon solutions, strategies and partnerships necessary to achieve sustained progress towards a competitive, dynamic low carbon economy and how the most successful companies are developing and implementing climate strategies.

In addition, the Summit will serve as a platform for individual businesses and major business initiatives to present their messages to the UN negotiations.

The results of the Summit will be presented to the Danish Government, host of the UN Climate Change Conference in 2009, and to world leaders negotiating the terms of the next international climate treaty. Furthermore, participants in the Summit will be encouraged to convey the outcomes to their respective governments.
